Self Hair Care At Home

Hello Everyone!

I’m here to answer all of your questions about what you should be doing during this time away from the Salon! Some of you see me as often as every 3 weeks or an infrequently as every 12 weeks. All of these things will be great for each and every one of you!

Self-Hair-Care for Bangs/Fringe

Let’s start with your Bangs/Fringe! Have you been trimming them at home and they are a little wonky? That’s OK!

I’ve showed y’all many times how to properly maintain them in between your cuts, but here is the breakdown of what  I tell you as you sit in my chair! It’s super simple and I have confidence you can do it!

Step 1: Wet and blow dry your bangs how you want them.

*Do not forget to “confuse” your cowlick by directing your blow dryer downward while moving your fingers in a circle. You’ve seen me do this on you a million times! You’ve got this!

Step 2:  : Where is your part? Create small triangle BASED ON YOUR PART. This triangle should not start further back than a half inch! You can always make them thicker later.

Step 3: POINT CUT (Turn your shears vertically and cut small amounts of hair to make sure its blended!)

Step 4: Continue to make larger triangles and POINT CUT until you have reached desired thickness and width.

*How wide are your bangs normally? NEVER go wider than your 2 recessions! The only exception to this is when your have lots and lots of short face framing! Or if you have a short/ pixie haircut!

Step 5: Do you see any weird thick spots? POINT CUT them in SMALL sections!

Step 6: Re-wet and blow dry them again. How do they look?

Note: I know it’s not ideal, and if your a fellow Hairstylist reading this your are rolling your eyes. BUT, I know y’all are going to trim your bangs, most of you already have, and it’s OK! I don’t know when I’m going to see y’all again, so I want you to at least know how to maintain your bangs! Especially for all of you who can’t get Botox right now! (Ha Ha! But really, it’s either bangs or Botox right? And right now the latter isn’t an option!)

Self-Hair-Care for Shampooing

The next home hair care tip is all about shampooing and deep conditioning!

Now is the time for you to start shampooing your hair less ladies! Every other day, every 2 days, even every 3! Any of those will be better for your hair than washing every day!

Are you exercising at home and worried about the sweat? Blow dry it and put dry shampoo in there! Seriously! You’re home, it’s time to give it a try!

Favorite Dry Shampoos:

  1. No Nothing Dry Shampoo
  2. Kevin Murphy Fresh Hair
  3. Pulp Riot Dry Shampoo
  4. Amika Dry Shampoo

Self-Hair-Care for Deep Conditioning

Deep conditioning once a week is key!

Don’t have a deep conditioner? That’s OK! Use your normal conditioner as a deep conditioner too.

Also, I prefer to deep condition my hair at night. If you want to walk around your house all day with conditioner in your hair, then deep condition in the day time!

How to deep condition:

  1. Shampoo twice
  2. Stick your head out of the shower and TOWEL DRY! (This is so important! You want your hair to soak up the good stuff not just water!)
  3. Distribute the conditioner from ends to roots and comb through the hair.
  4. Squeeze the remaining excess water out and clip your hair on top of your head.
  5. Leave in overnight.
    • Worried about your pillow? Put a thick towel wrapped around your pillow.
  6. In the morning, rinse your hair!
    • Don’t forget to wash your face to remove any conditioner that got on it as you slept.

Self-Hair-Care for Color

My third and last home hair care tip is for all my ladies that get color.

You guys, I’m so sorry that you are having to deal with your roots right now! I know how difficult it is either letting them grow out or coloring them at home. Just remember, this too shall pass!

If you ARE touching up your own roots at home with real color, here are a few tips.

  1. DO NOT over lap color that you’ve previously colored. It will be darker than you wanted.
  2. DO NOT try to go lighter than you normally do. This will end up with undesired warmth.
  3. *TRY* to only do this once or twice. Its difficult to correct home color already but the more you do it the harder it is.
  4. If you can manage to just color the parts that matter, an inch on either side of your part and hairline, I suggest that too. The back of your head is difficult to reach and see, so there’s more room for mistakes.

For all of you letting your roots grow, here are my tips for you…

  1. Embrace it! Most women are doing the same thing you are!
  2. Wear a hat when you go out. You should be doing this if you are outside for long periods of time anyways. The sun damages your color!
  3. Keep the brassiness away by using your purple shampoo! If you are struggling with unwanted warmth in your blonde hair, or even gold tones, use baking soda as your shampoo once a week.
    • How to: Make a thin paste in your hands with just water and baking soda and distribute over your scalp. MASSAGE YOUR SCALP for 60 seconds. Let sit for at least 5 more minutes then rinse WHILE MASSAGING with warm water. Remember, hot water has more color changing minerals than your cold water!

I hope that these few tips help you get through this time away from the Salon!
